Why a webAtlas?

The region – situated in the heart of the Sahara desert – hosts one of the most fascinating concentrations of rock art sites worldwide. The art is a visual archive representing the most tangible remains of the symbolic and social world of the humans who inhabited and traversed the massifs in the last ten thousand years.

Such extraordinary heritage has partially vanished, owing to both natural processes and human impact. And it risks disappearing altogether if not adequately preserved and managed. The webAtlas is conceived as a tool to raise the awareness of the cultural value of rock art as a powerful means to protect and transmit cultural heritage to the next generations.
